When it comes to packing your locker, these tips should help to keep your items safe and your experience as a renter a happy one.
Here are our 10 top tips:
Tip #1 – Think about what you will need to access – if it is something that you will not need, then pack it in the back of the unit and conversely if it is something that you will need frequently or even from time to time, pack it towards the front. This will be especially helpful when the weather gets cold and you want to limit you and your items to the outside elements.
Tip #2 – Pack your items within the storage unit so that there can be adequate circulation between boxes and furniture. A good idea is to store your items on wood pallets to encourage air circulation below and around your items.
Tip #3 – Mold and mildew can be huge concerns when storing your items. To avoid this, remove plastic and shrink wrap from all items and instead use old linens and blankets to protect your items, such as wood furniture, sofa’s, electronics, etc. This is especially important for mattresses – make sure you remove the plastic wrap as mould can grow on the outside of the mattress as well as on the inside, making that mattress no longer usable.
Tip #4 – Moving day can bring all types of weather, thus if it is a rainy or snowy day, ensure you dry off all of your surfaces, boxes, furniture so that condensation and mould do not grow.
Tip #5 – Sometimes people use our storage units for their motarized items, such as vehicles, snowmobiles and lawnmowers. We advise you to remove all fluids from the machines and place cardboard under these machines so that if they do drip it does not ruin the unit, or any other items you have stored alongside the machine as these drips can spread quickly.
Tip #6 – You may store non-perishables, however NO perishable food items as they will attract rodents, which will spread to other units. Not sure what is a perishable? Just ask – we are here to help you.
Tip #7 – Use blue bins or garbage bins to store loose items, such as gardening or construction items so that they don’t get spread out on the floor of your unit. This reserves that valuable space for boxes and furniture items.
Tip #8 – To save space, remove all legs from tables and sofa’s and disassemble big furniture pieces like your king or queen beds, as they can be stood up in the corners of the unit. Remember to tape the legs you removed together so that when you are ready to re-assemble these pieces the screws and the legs are easily found.
Tip #9 - When possible cover all wood furniture with linens or blankets to preserve the wood and as a great base to store other boxes or items on top.
Tip #10 – We have seen this too many times so this is a big one and it is last, so you remember it the most. Never stand your sofa on it’s end or on the armrest. They are only designed to be placed on their legs and can withstand having other items placed on top to save space – just remember to place linens on top of the sofa before placing other items on top.
